Keeping Your Building Safe and Secure with an Access Roof Hatch
An access roof hatch is a type of door installed on the Roof of a building. It provides easy access to the top for maintenance and repair work but can also use as a point of entry for authorized personnel. Aluminum, steel, and stainless steel are just materials suitable for constructing access roof hatches.
Installing an access roof hatch is an efficient method of achieving this objective. This article will explain why and how a roof hatch can improve the safety of your building.
Benefits of an Access Roof Hatch
Here’s why you should install a roof hatch:
Increased Security
The excellent safety of an access roof hatch is among its essential benefits. You can regulate who gets access to your building’s Roof by installing a roof hatch. Only authorized personnel can enter the building through the roof hatch, reducing the risk of burglary and other intrusions.
Improved safety
Another advantage of an access roof hatch is improved safety. If there’s a fire or a different urgent situation, a roof hatch can provide a safe and quick escape route for people in the building. Additionally, a roof hatch can use by firefighters to access the Roof of the building for rescue and firefighting purposes.
Easy Access to Maintenance and Repairs
Access roof hatches provide easy access to the Roof of a building for maintenance and repair work. It can save time and money, as workers will not need external ladders to access the top.
Energy Efficiency
A building can also use less energy with a well-insulated access hatch on the Roof. By preventing heat loss and reducing drafts, an insulated roof hatch can help to lower heating and cooling costs.
Types of Access Roof Hatches
Several access roof hatches are available, each with advantages and disadvantages. Here are the most frequent types:
Single Leaf Access Hatch
The most common roof hatch type is one with a single door. It has one door that opens to let people get on the Roof. Single-leaf access hatches come in various sizes and materials.
Double Leaf Access Hatch
A double-leaf access hatch is similar to a single-leaf access hatch but has two open doors in the middle. This hatch type is ideal for more significant buildings where a single entry would be too small.
Sliding Roof Hatch
A sliding roof hatch is a type of Hatch that slides open rather than swinging out like a traditional hatch. Sliding roof hatches are ideal for buildings with limited space, and a swinging hatch would be impractical.
Smoke Vent Hatch
A smoke vent hatch is an opening in a facility that permits smoke and heat to escape during a fire. Building codes often require these hatches to improve fire safety.
How to Install Roof Hatches
Installing an access roof hatch is a job best left to professionals. A qualified contractor can ensure the roof hatch installs correctly and meets all safety and building code requirements. Here are the steps in establishing an access roof hatch:
Step 1: Prepare the hole in the roof deck to match the Roof Hatch’s inside dimension.
Step 2: For large hatches 6′ 0″ x 6′ 0″ and more significantly, the Roof should prepare with structural members capable of supporting the Hatch’s weight. For weight determination, use 20 pds / per square foot of the Hatch’s size. (Ex. For a 6′ x 6′ hatch, the weight would be 720 pds).
Step 3: Set the unit down on the roof deck.
Step 4: Line up the inside opening of the team with the hole prepared in the roof deck.
Step 5: Nail or Screw directly into the Roof through the predrilled mounting holes in the Roof Hatch’s (Self Flashing) Flange.
Step 6: Lay the Cant (by others) down a top of the Roof Hatch’s flange to flush with the unit’s insulated Curb Wall. The Cant should not extend further than the Roof Hatch Cover’s edge.
Step 7: Bring roof-flashing materials and sealants over the Roof Hatch Flange, over the Cant, and up under the Curb Frame/Flashing. (See detail below).
Step 8: Our galvanized roof hatch comes finished with a gray primer coat of paint. It needs to be painted with a weather-resistant coat to finish the installation. (Our aluminum roof hatch is furnished with a Mill Finish and does not require painting to complete installation).
